Automatic

To ride an automatic:

You must be the holder of a UK driving licence which has two parts:
- Photo card
- Paper counterpart (unless you have a old style paper licence).

If you hold an EU licence you must apply for a UK driver number.

16 year old riders are restricted to mopeds which are no larger than 50cc and restricted to 31mph.

After successfully completing a Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT), within 2 years you must pass: a motorcycle theory test 2 practical tests - modular 1 and modular 2

After this you can ride a moped without L plates and carry a pillion. You are not allowed on motorways.

LIGHT AUTO MOTORCYCLE LICENCE (A1)

This allows you to ride any bike up to 125cc with a power output of 11kw. The practical tests are taken on a bike between 75cc and 125cc.

When riders are 17 and have:
- A valid licence
- Current CBT certificate (DL196)
- Passed a motorcycle theory test

They are then able to take practical tests - modular 1 and modular 2 for a light automatic motorcycle (A1).

STANDARD AUTOMATIC MOTORCYCLE LICENCE

This is obtained if the practical tests were taken on a bike over 120cc but no more than 125cc. It must be capable of reaching at least 100kmph. After this, you will be restricted to riding a bike of up to 25kw with a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kw/kg. After these 2 years you are able to ride any size of bike.

DIRECT ACCESS FOR AUTOMATICS

This is for riders aged 21 or over or those who reach 21 before their two year restriction.

After the CBT and theory test, the practical tests may be taken on an automatic motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kw. If you pass, you are able to ride any sized bike. All or part of the CBT course can be taken on a learner bike or a large bike. You can practise for your practical tests on a bike bigger than the learning bike specification if:
- You are accompanied by an approved instructor
- You have radio contact with the instructor
- You wear fluorescent or reflective clothing
- You follow all other provisional licence restrictions

ACCELERATED ACCESS FOR AUTOMATICS

Riders who reach 21 within the 2 year restricted period of (25kw machines maximum) can ride a larger automatic bike if they pass further tests on a motorcycle of at least 35kw. You can practise on automatic bikes over 25kw as long as:
- You are accompanied by an approved instructor
- You have radio contact with the instructor
- You wear fluorescent or reflective clothing
- You follow all other provisional licence restrictions

You will revert to learner status while practising on a motorcycle larger than 25kw although test failure will not affect your existing licence.
